Beginners guide to Veganism

What is this vegan you speak of? Why is everybody vegan nowadays? Why are they always trying to make me become one?

To be honest, by now you probably know the answer to all those questions – except maybe the last one – because veganism is so mainstream now and we just love to shove it in your face. Kidding.. kind of.

Tip 2: Know what you’re getting into!

And by that I mean, not only do your research but know what it means to be vegan and why people decide to transition to a vegan lifestyle.

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

🐮 For the animals. Each year 70 billion land animals and trillions of fish are slaughtered for food. The vast majority of animals reared for meat, milk and eggs are factory farmed. They live out their lives crammed inside sheds or vast warehouses, with nothing to occupy their minds and without individual care. Often times food labels such as ‘free-range’ and ‘grass-fed’ can be misleading, for example, ‘free-range’ does not mean the animals ever went outside, just that they had access to it. And ‘grass-fed’ cows were likely to have spent the majority of their life confined but fed grass-based feed.

🌍 For the planet. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, species loss, ocean dead zones and deforestation. Animal agriculture is responsible for 51% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than every car, plane, ship and train in the world!

💚 For your health. The World Health Organisation have stated that those eating a whole-food, plant based diet are likely to live longer and are a lot less likely to develop diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, various cancers, high blood pressure and many more. It also entirely removes the risk of being passed on diseases from the animals you eat, and illnesses from it not being cooked correctly, such as salmonella.

👫 For the people. Animal farming uses 83% of agricultural land but provides just 18% of calories, which means it takes up a lot more land to produce meat than it does to produce plant foods, thus leaving people hungry. 34% of human-edible crops are fed to farmed animals, and the amount of food we get back from them is very little in regards to what we feed them. For example, pigs eat 8.4kg of feed for each 1kg of meat they produce, while chickens need 3.4kg of feed to produce 1kg of meat. So why are 815 million people still going to bed hungry?
